October 2009

Dear Rancho Families,

One of the great things about Rancho is that we always strive for excellence and hold gratitude in high esteem.  With that being said, Rancho does it again!  If you read the Milpitas Post last Thursday you would have found several articles of recognition for Rancho.  Rancho received recognitions in the following categories: BestSchool, Principal, Counselor and Teachers: Schmidt and Reinders.  Thank you to the Milpitas Community for your constant support and acknowledgment of our efforts!  We are very proud of our school and we hope that you are too!

Sincerely,
Leticia Villa-Gascon, Principal

Back to School Night

Thanks to all those who attended “Back to School Night.”  What a fantastic turnout!  By taking the time to come to school on a weeknight, you are showing your child how important their education is to you.  I had the pleasure of having numerous conversations with many of you.  It is always nice to hear firsthand how you feel about your child’s success at Rancho.

A special thanks to the Superintendent Dr. Karl Black, Board of Education’s Marsha Grilli and Gunawan Alisantosa, and district members Linh Le and Leo Mapagu for attending our back to school night.  I also want to extend my thanks to the Dad’s club for barbequing and providing the hot dogs!!

Parking Lot Etiquette

Please be aware that we have had a tremendous amount of trouble in the parking lot.  Parents are not following the normal rules of driving such as parking in a “no parking zone” or blocking traffic.  Please be courteous to one another and be especially vigilant for our students.  Prevention of a major incident is extremely important.  If you use either parking lot, please be cautious of the rules and regulations of driving.

Uniform Fitting a Little Tight?

Has your child outgrown his or her uniform from last year?  Don’t forget that you can donate uniforms to the Rancho uniform closet.  Drop off slightly used uniform items in the office.

G.A.T.E. Classes

GATE classes will begin in October.  Applications and course descriptions went out last week in Advisory classes.  If your child did not receive an application, have them come to see Ms. Thompson or Ms. Reinders.  We will be offering enrichment courses, which include art, sewing 101, paper flowers, marine science, introduction to engineering, Spanish, jazz, French, and Latin.

Nothing but Nets

Nothing But Nets is a grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.  Malaria kills a child in Africa every 30 seconds. However, it is so easy to prevent this disease and save the lives of thousands of people every year. Mrs. Thompson's advisory class hosted a free throw contest to raise money to send bed nets to protect families from malaria carrying mosquitos.  Thanks to the participation of students and teachers at Rancho, we are able to help save hundreds of lives in Africa.

School Clubs

Rancho is excited to have a multitude of clubs for all students.  Some of the clubs being offered this year are the Black Student Union, Disney Club, Filipino Club, Homework Club, Latino Student Union, National Junior Honor Society, Vietnamese Student Association, Girls for a Change and Drama Club.  If your student is not currently a member of any club, have them talk to a teacher advisor for more information.

The Incredibles

The Incredibles Team will be taking a field trip on October 15, 2009 to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  The students will be leaving Rancho at 9:00 and returning around 3:30 to 4:00.  The students will experience hands on activities with Marine life.  The cost is $15 per student.  Students may buy or bring their lunch.  Please contact Mr. Nguyen at Rancho if you are interesting in chaperoning our field trip.

School Start Time

School starts at 8:30 a.m. – Students should not be on campus before 8:00 A.M. There is no supervision until 8:15 A.M. Students should not be loitering on campus before or after school unless they are attending a school-sponsored event such as GATE, Homework Club, Tutorial or Athletics.

Public Hearing Announcement

In accordance with Education Code 60119, Milpitas Unified School District will hold a public hearing to discuss the availability of books and instructional materials for Kindergarten through 12th grade students at the District Office, 1331 E. Calaveras Blvd, Board Room, Milpitas, California. The hearing will be held during the October 13, 2009 Milpitas Unified School District Board meeting at 7:00 p.m.

Frascone’s Corner

This month I would like to start by defining the word, “RESPECT”.  Respect has great importance in everyday life.  As children, we are taught to respect our parents, teachers, and elders, school rules and traffic laws, family and cultural traditions, other people's feelings and rights, our country's flag and leaders, the truth and people's differing opinions. We develop great respect for people we consider exemplary and lose respect for those we discover to be clay-footed, and so we may try to respect only those who are truly worthy of our respect. We may also come to believe that, at some level, all people are worthy of respect-

-Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

At Rancho Milpitas Middle School, respect is of the utmost importance. It is a life skill often taught at home and is one that our school highly values and teaches. We want our students to respect themselves and those around them. We want them to display respect in everything they do from being on time to class to throwing away their trash after breaks in order to keep a clean campus with a climate of respect. Our greatest hope for our students is that by showing respect and giving it, they will respect themselves and their families as well.

Throughout this month, Rancho will be focusing on the meaning of, “RESPECT” with our students. Mr. Frascone Out…

Parent Trivia Question - I would like to see how many of our parents really read the monthly newsletter.  The first 10 parents who respond to this month's trivia question either by email (lvilla@musd.org) or in the office will win a prize.

Question: How do you teach "respect" in your household?
