A.L.M.A.

Advancing Latino/Minority Mathematics and Achievement

The ALMA program is designed to help Latino and minority students advance in mathematics and improve their self esteem.  The ALMA student program consists of 1) an academically rigorous 7th and 8th grade mathematics program; 2) Chicano History; 3) activities/presentations that provide a structured approach for students to examine and discuss the concepts of good role models, leadership and career choices.

ALMA is open to all students yet is specifically designed to meet the needs of students from populations with low STAR test scores and grade point averages.

ALMA instructors create and foster a familia-like environment to provide students with the support and motivation likely to enable them to succeed in furthering their educational goals.  Parents and family involvement and participation are also important to help achieve these goals.  The instructors will work to acknowledge the social and cultural identities of students’ families and integrate those identities into the program.

The ALMA model consists of three interrelated components: math, cultural history, and mentoring.  This approach provides a focused, sustained, and engaging learning environment for students.  This model and approach provides students with individual, culturally sensitive, academic, and career counseling designed to help each of them promote and achieve success while enrolled in school.
